A momentous year, 1914.
Assassination of the heir to the Austrian throne started World War
1. Woodrow Wilson’s presidency saw the
opening of the Panama Canal to commercial shipping. Death claimed George Westinghouse – Pittsburgh’s inventor and
electrical-industry pioneer. In
downtown Pittsburgh, the City completed the massive two-year Grant Hill
excavation project that lowered “The Knob” to its present Grant Street
elevation.
And, the Star Electric and Construction Company was established to do electrical installation work as Pittsburgh began to change over from gas to electric lighting. Since 1914, various electrical contractors have come and gone, but Star Electric, under three generations of family ownership and guidance, has thrived. Today, it is one of the oldest electrical contractors on continuous operation in Pennsylvania – and second to none in quality, service and performance.
